DuBois, PA — For Jennifer Jackson, owner of Brady Street Florist in DuBois, the coronavirus pandemic hit her business hard. She expected a big break during the spring but all of her wedding and prom engagements were cancelled. Since transitioning into the yellow phase today, Jackson said business is looking up with Mother's Day right around the corner. Since people aren't visiting their parents during the pandemic, she's been sending out a lot flower deliveries.

Mets get DH Vogelbach from Pirates in trade for reliever

NEW YORK (AP) — The first-place New York Mets added some much-needed punch at designated hitter Friday, acquiring Daniel Vogelbach from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a trade for rookie reliever Colin Holderman. The burly Vogelbach, a left-handed hitter and an All-Star in 2019 with Seattle, was batting .228 with 12 home runs, 34 RBIs and a .769 OPS in 75 games for the rebuilding Pirates. “We wanted to get an offensive player and we did that in landing Vogey,” first-year Mets general manager Billy Eppler said.

Nine Charged in 20-Year-Long Multi-State Theft Ring

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Details released Thursday morning at the William Nealon Federal Building in Scranton that nine people are charged with stealing significant artwork, artifacts, and priceless sports memorabilia over a 20-year span. When items were stolen, they were then brought to NEPA where they were sold for less than what they are worth. "After many of these thefts, the defendants would bring items back to northeastern Pennsylvania, melt them down, and sell the pieces for fractions of the full and fair market value"

North Carolina man and bear give each other a scare

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — A Ring camera captured the moment an Asheville man and a bear came face to face, giving each other a scare. People who've lived in western North Carolina for a while are typically used to coexisting with black bears. However, few get as close of an encounter as David Oppenheimer. At the end of the day on Tuesday, April 11, Oppenheimer said he was relaxing in a chair in his carport when he heard his Ring camera chime.

THON 2022 raises a record $13.7 million

CENTRE, Pa. (WJAC) — The 2022 THON dance marathon has raised a record breaking total of $13,756,374.50 for the fight against Pediatric Cancer. Penn State's annual 46-hour dance marathon was live again this year after going virtual during the pandemic in order to raise millions of dollars for the Four Diamonds fund at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital. First organized by students in 1973, THON has grown into the largest student-run philanthropy in the world with more than 16,500 student volunteers participating in fundraising efforts all year long.

Annual Bluegrass festival returns to Centre Co.

CENTRE CO, Pa (WJAC) — The Remington Ryde Bluegrass Festival kicked off Thursday afternoon at the Grange Fairgrounds in Centre Hall. A bevy of national Bluegrass performers are scheduled, including national acts that have performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Authorities ask for public's help to identify 'person of interest' in New Kensington fatal shooting

Authorities in western Pennsylvania are asking for the public's help in identifying a "person of interest" in a fatal shooting that occurred last week in the New Kensington area. Police say on Thursday, October 19, officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of Kenneth Avenue for a report of a victim with a gunshot wound. Investigators say the victim, identified as 31-year-old Troy Vickers Jr., was transported to a Pittsburgh-area hospital where he later passed away, on October 21st.

Inmate, guard charged in stabbing death in prison cell

DALLAS, Pa. (AP) — A prison inmate has been charged with criminal homicide and a prison guard with involuntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of another inmate at a northeastern Pennsylvania prison earlier this year. Twenty-five-year-old inmate Nafese Pierce is charged with criminal homicide in the death of 24-year-old fellow inmate Edgar Gearhart, who was stabbed Jan. 28 in his cell at the State Correctional Institution-Dallas. Twenty-five-year-old corrections officer Osmel Martinez of Kingston is charged with involuntary manslaughter, obstruction of justice and unknown falsification to authorities, accused of allowing the crime and then ignoring concerns from other inmates about the victim's injuries.
