WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris used a profanity on Monday while offering advice to young Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders about how to break through barriers. Harris was participating in a conversation moderated by actor and comedian Jimmy O. Yang when he asked her what it means to be the first vice president of Asian descent and how that heritage has informed her views and roles as a leader.

Woodward-area woman pleads 'no contest' in stabbing death of former boyfriend

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities in Centre County say a Woodward-area woman pleaded "no contest" Friday afternoon in the stabbing death of her former boyfriend last April. Investigators say Brittany Guisewhite, 28, was accused of stabbing Robert Farwell during an argument at her home along Mountain Ave. Guisewhite made repeated claims of self-defense, as well as claims of PTSD and Battered Woman Syndrome. Officials say Guisewhite faces up to eight years in state prison as part of the plea bargain.

Coroner IDs victim of fatal mining accident in Somerset County

THE LATEST |Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — Somerset County coroner Cullen Swank has identified the victim of Monday's fatal mining accident in Conemaugh Township. Swank says 37-year-old Brandon Frederick, of Johnstown, was killed after he became trapped between a shuttle car and a mine rib. Authorities say Frederick suffered multiple blunt force and crushing injuries to his torso. The coroner's office has ruled his death as accidental. 2nd UPDATE |Officials with the Department of Environmental Protection say they have ordered the operators of the Maple Springs Mine in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County to temporarily cease operations following Monday's workplace fatality.

Court upholds sentence of ex-Bellwood-Antis wrestling coach convicted of child sex abuse

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — The state superior court has upheld the sentence for a former Blair County wrestling coach convicted of child sex abuse. Convicted sex offender Ryan Blazier will have to serve 21 to 42 years in prison following this week's ruling. In October of 2021, Blazier was found guilty of sexually abusing two students while serving as a junior high wresting coach at Bellwood-Antis. His sentence includes a lifetime registry on the sex offender list and he is required to take sex offender classes in prison.

Daily marijuana use outpaces daily drinking in the US, a new study says

For the first time, the number of Americans who use marijuana just about every day has surpassed the number who drink that often, a shift some 40 years in the making as recreational pot use became more mainstream and legal in nearly half of U.S. states. In 2022, an estimated 17.7 million people reported using marijuana daily or near-daily compared to 14.7 million daily or near-daily drinkers, according an analysis of national survey data.

Johnstown native joins Pitt football staff as graduate assistant

PITTSBURGH - Johnstown native LaRod Stephens-Howling joined the University of Pittsburgh’s football staff on Friday as a graduate assistant. Coach Pat Narduzzi said Stephens-Howling will be involved with recruiting and operations. Stephens-Howling, a graduate of Greater Johnstown High School, played for Pitt from 2005-08 and twice was the team’s leading rusher. He was a seventh-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2009 and played four seasons for them as a running back and kick returner.

Veterans helping veterans at SCI-Houtzdale

HOUTZDALE - The Veterans Service Unit at the State Correctional Institute at Houtzdale is a place filled with men from all backgrounds: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. But now, they all wear the same uniform. The VSU helps veteran inmates with reentry into society and connects them with the benefits they earned from their service. Chris Reed, the Facility Veterans Coordinator, said the VSU was established in 2016 with just 30 veteran inmates.

Woman fights back during attempted robbery at Walmart parking lot

AUBURN, Wash. (KOMO) — A suspected victim is recovering from a gunshot wound after she reportedly defended herself during an attempted robbery. Police in Washington responded to a shootout Tuesday morning in the parking lot outside of an Auburn Walmart. Auburn police said two armed suspects attempted to rob a a 53-year-old woman sitting in her vehicle. When the suspects demanded the woman's "property," she drew a gun and shot at them, according to police.

5 area McDonald's reportedly violated child labor laws, Dept. of Labor says

Officials with the US Department of Labor are reporting that an area McDonald's franchisee has reportedly violated multiple child labor laws. Authorities say an investigation revealed that Endor Inc., based in Cranberry Township, allegedly employed 34 juveniles, across five locations, and forced them to work longer and later hours than permitted by child labor laws. “Fast food restaurants offer young workers an opportunity to gain valuable work experience, but federal law makes sure their experiences do not come at the expense of their education or well-being,” explained Wage and Hour Division District Director John DuMont in Pittsburgh.
