Mine 40 Overlook in Richland Township put up for sale

A former coal mine may have a new owner soon as a local organization is looking to sell the property.

Bids are being taken for the Mine 40 Overlook in Richland Township, which is owned and maintained by the Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation.

Russell Heiple, solicitor with the Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation, said they deeded the property to Scalp Level Borough in 1992 due to it being a financial burden.

Heiple said that they took it back in 2017 because the borough no longer wanted it, but stated it is still a financial burden.

He also said they are hoping to sell the roughly 1.5-acre property to someone who might build on it and use it for their own purpose.

Heiple said the overlook is not as big as a tourist attraction as it once was and that they would like to keep the old coal heritage alive.

He said, "We're trying to keep coal alive in Windber, even though it's not environmentally friendly anymore. We're keeping the memories alive."

They are currently taking bids for the property and that it will be sold to the highest bidder.
