Ohio woman charged after dead dog found in cage outside Brookville hotel, police say
Jefferson Co., PA (WJAC) — Police in Jefferson County have filed charges against an Ohio woman after a dead dog was found inside a cage outside a Brookville hotel earlier this year.
Brookville police say they began investigating the incident in mid-January after the dog was found outside the Rodeway Inn.
Police say surveillance video reportedly showed a couple removing the cage from the hotel room and leaving it in the parking lot.
Upon further investigation, police identified one of the individuals in the video as 28-year-old Yasmin Posley, of Akron, Ohio.
Authorities say they were eventually able to make contact with Posley, who explained that she was a traveling nurse and that she had purchased two puppies, months prior, from an individual on Facebook.
Police say Posley claimed that both dogs initially seemed healthy but then began showing signs that they "were not holding their weight."
Authorities say Posley told police that she had scheduled an appointment with her local vet but missed it due to her job.
Police say Posley claimed that she then purchased a de-wormer online for the two puppies.
According to the affidavit, she claimed that one of the dogs responded positively to the medicine but the other did not, so she reportedly scheduled an appointment at Northfork Vet Clinic in Brookville.
Police say records showed that the appointment was scheduled for mid-December but was missed without any explanation from Posley.
Authorities say Posley claimed that the dog had died before the appointment and that she kept it in its cage, inside the hotel room, for 2 to 3 weeks because she "did not know how to dispose of it properly."
Investigators say a medical evaluation revealed that the dog had suffered from malnutrition and starvation and likely died as a result of neglect and/or abuse.
According to online court records, Posley was arraigned Tuesday on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals, animal cruelty and animal neglect.
She was released on unsecured bail.
