Spring Mills man accused of repeatedly abusing young girl over period of 5+ years

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Authorities in Centre County say a Spring Mills man is behind bars following an investigation into allegations that he repeatedly sexually abused a young girl over a five-year period. According to the affidavit, police were first contacted in January of 2023, by the victim's mother, after the victim reportedly disclosed that she had been repeatedly abused by 35-year-old Vladimir Slavskiy. Police say the victim told investigators that the alleged abuse began in 2017, when she was approximately 7 or 8 years old.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Conemaugh Health System has named its next CEO. William Caldwell will be taking over the reigns after Steve Tucker announced his retirement in June after 33 years. His retirement goes into effect Sept. 7. “Bill is an experienced health care executive known for his passion for quality care, strong operational skills, and unwavering commitment to employees, physicians and patients," said Victor Giovanetti, LifePoint Health Eastern Group president. Caldwell has been CEO of Wilson Medical Center, a Duke LifePoint health care facility, in North Carolina since 2014.

DuBois man convicted of statutory sexual assault faces additional child rape charges

SANDY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WJAC) — Police say a man already serving a jail sentence for sexually assaulting a young girl faces additional felony child rape charges after a second victim came forward. According to a criminal complaint, Sandy Township police say they were notified of allegations of child sex abuse in July 2019. Police say the victim, a 14-year-old girl, told authorities a man had inappropriately touched and had sex with her over the course of four years.

Hyndman woman charged with assault, accused of throwing cell phone at young boy, PSP says

BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — State police in Bedford County say a Hyndman woman is behind bars, accused of assaulting a young boy by throwing a cell phone at him. Troopers say on April 22nd, they were contact by CYS to investigate an alleged physical altercation between a 10-year-old boy and 33-year-old Kathryn Laber. According to the affidavit, investigators say the incident reportedly occurred the day prior at a residence in Londonderry Township.

Man's death at local swimming hole prompts officials to share water safety tips

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — A 20 year old lost his life over the weekend while swimming at a popular spot in Somerset County. Now officials are sharing what swimmers should do in hopes of preventing a day at the river from turning deadly. Sunday afternoon, Pittsburgh man, Jeremiah Thompson drowned at a swimming hole in Paint Township. Just one day later, people are out at the same location where Thompson lost his life.

Judge mulls challenge to charge in pregnant woman overdose

BUTLER, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania judge is deliberating over a challenge to a criminal charge brought against a woman who authorities said overdosed while pregnant. Thirty-year-old Kasey Dischman was charged with aggravated assault on an unborn child. Authorities said her child was delivered by emergency C-section following the June 23 overdose and sustained lasting injuries. Public defender Joseph Smith argued Tuesday in Butler County that state law bars prosecutors from charging a pregnant woman with aggravated assault of her own unborn child.
