Centre County residents warned of tax scam targeting seniors

The Centre County tax office says scammers have been calling residents and falsely claiming that tax bills are due. Centre County administrator John Franek says that the tax office would never ask for personal information like a credit card number over the phone. He says that if you get one of these calls, hang up, and immediately report it to the tax office and local law enforcement. Franek says they started receiving notice of the scam calls from county residents over the last two weeks.

Georgia corrections officer fatally attacked by inmate using homemade weapon: Officials

TATTNALL COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) — A Georgia corrections officer is dead after an inmate attacked him. According to the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC), Correctional Officer Robert Clark was escorting two inmates at Smith State Prison in Glennville when one of the inmates, later identified as Layton Lester, assaulted him from behind with a homemade weapon. The other inmate was also assaulted after trying to help Officer Clark. GDC officials said Clark, 42, started his career in April of this year.

Mine 40 Overlook in Richland Township put up for sale

A former coal mine may have a new owner soon as a local organization is looking to sell the property. Bids are being taken for the Mine 40 Overlook in Richland Township, which is owned and maintained by the Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation. Russell Heiple, solicitor with the Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation, said they deeded the property to Scalp Level Borough in 1992 due to it being a financial burden.
