A confirmed tornado was on the ground around 7 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago. "This tornado has been touching the ground intermittently so far and is moving east. There are additional circulations along the line south of O'Hare. Seek shelter if in the warned area,"

Bellefonte man sentenced to prison time in domestic-related shooting

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities in Centre County say a Bellefonte man was sentenced to prison time Thursday for his role in a domestic-related shooting last June. District Attorney Bernie Cantorna confirmed that 28-year-old Kyle Hockenberry will serve 3 to 8 years in state prison after pleading guilty to charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and making terroristic threats. Hockenberry was initially charged with attempted homicide in early June after police say he shot another man during an altercation at a residence in Worth Township.

Blair County man sentenced up to 37 years in prison for assault and home invasion

Blair County, PA — Authorities say a Blair County man has been sentenced to serve 18.5 to 37 years in prison. Court records show that 22-year-old Kyler Luckadoo reportedly assaulted a fellow inmate in 2022. The sentence is also in connection to his role in a Tyrone home invasion in 2021 in which he allegedly stole marijuana and cash. Online court records show that Luckadoo has already been in the Blair County Prison for three years.

Landfill fire in Jackson Township, according to dispatch

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, Pa (WJAC). — Cambria County dispatch says there is a large, outdoor fire at Laurel Highlands Landfill in Jackson Township. Dispatch says West Taylor Volunteer Fire Company, Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Company and Nanty Glo Fire Company were all called to the scene Monday morning. Officials say several garbage trucks were turned away by staff because of the fire. Waste Management released the following statement: Waste Management staff alerted the Jackson Township Fire Company this morning of a fire taking place on the working face of Laurel Highlands Landfill.

Man sentenced to jail time, probation in animal cruelty, neglect case on Centre Co. farm

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — As least a couple months in jail and special provisions for probation, that is the sentence for a Centre County man who reportedly had animals found dead or neglected on his farm. State police say they were called to the 150-acre, Curtin Township farm of Levi Byler, in January of 2023, following a report of a dead horse that had been lying in a farm field for a week.

The latest annual report from the Social Security Board of Trustees indicates that Social Security continues to grapple with "significant financing issues," and is on course to be insolvent by 2035. Since 2010, Social Security has been operating at a deficit, spending more money than it brings in.

Penn State remains at #7 in latest college football rankings

University Park, PA (WJAC) — Following a wild start to the 2023 college football season, the Associated Press released its updated Top 25 rankings on Tuesday. Penn State remains at #7 on the list following the Nittany Lions' 38-15 victory over West Virginia on Saturday night. Sophomore quarterback Drew Allar was the star of the show, completing 21 of his 29 pass attempts, for 325 yards and three touchdowns. The Nittany Lions now look to follow-up their week one performance as they prepare to host Delaware on Saturday at Beaver Stadium.

Cambria Co. woman accused of committing healthcare fraud

Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — Federal authorities announced that a Cambria County woman has been charged with conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. According to court documents, Florentina Mayko was charged after she allegedly defrauded Medicare and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, between 2017 and 2019. Mayko allegedly submitted medically unnecessary urine drug tests for chronic opioid patients at medical clinics where she served as the chief executive officer.

Eldorado Civic group asking for public participation in recycling program, donations

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — The Eldorado Civic Association in Altoona, which oversees the Altoona Teener League and Miracle League of Blair County, is asking for the community’s help with their aluminum can recycling program. The money earned from the recycling goes to help with the upkeep of the baseball fields the leagues use, as well as several civic initiatives such as helping area families around the holidays. People can help out the organization by dropping off empty aluminum cans at the group’s meeting place, which is located at 5939 California Avenue.
