3 killed when small plane crashes in West Virginia

METZ, W.Va. (AP) — Three people were killed when a small plane crashed in northern West Virginia, authorities said. Marion County Sheriff Jimmy Riffle told WV News that the pilot and two passengers were found dead at the scene. The aircraft was found “on a steep incline in a heavily wooded area,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. The single-engine plane was flying from Bloomfield, Indiana, to Myerstown, Pennsylvania, when it went down Thursday in the Marion County community of Metz, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a news release.

Cleanup underway after barge leaks up to 2,000 gallons of oil in Galveston

GALVESTON, Texas (TND) — It's estimated that 1,000 to 2,000 gallons of oil leaked into surrounding water after a barge hit a bridge in Galveston, Texas Wednesday. Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard, Texas General Land Office and Martin Marine provided an update on the ongoing efforts at Pelican Island Bridge and the Galveston Bay more than 24 hours after the collision. A break in the barge's coupling caused the 321-foot barge to strike, according to Rick Freed, Vice President of the barge operator, Marine Division.

NJ governor spent nearly $12K on concessions at Taylor Swift concert, football games, report says

Federal officials investigating another near-collision at US airport

WASHINGTON (TND) — The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed it is investigating a runway incursion at Boston's Logan International Airport on Monday. It's the fifth near-collision at an airport in the U.S. this year. The incident occurred "when a Learjet 60 began a takeoff roll as a JetBlue Embraer 190 was preparing to land on an intersecting runway. No damage or injuries were reported," the NTSB tweeted Wednesday night. The Federal Aviation Administration said its preliminary review found the pilot of the Learjet took off without clearance.

Sister of murdered Altoona woman fights to keep killer behind bars

Sherry Leighty of Altoona had been missing since 1999 before her father-in-law admitted to her murder in 2013. For the last five years, Leighty’s sister has been fighting to make sure he doesn’t get out on parole. Shelly Nagle said her sister’s murderer was denied parole for the fourth time last month and that she will continue to work to keep him in prison.
